Proven Methods to Save Energy with Commercial HVAC Systems.

Alpha Mechanical News

Strategies for Making HVAC Energy Efficiency Improvements

How can you maximize the return on time and money invested in lowering energy bills? One way is by using proven strategies. Here are some of the most effective actions and HVAC energy saving tips from Alpha Mechanical.

1. Perform an energy audit

The first step in finding out how to reduce energy consumption in buildings is to find out when, and where energy is being used and thus wasted by completing an energy audit. A good place to start when trying to get a handle on your energy usage is to review your buildings expenses and your service, repair and maintenance records. Also a full inspection of your HVAC system should be conducted. You might find that you can reduce energy consumption by taking care of minor problems such as blocked vents or filters.

The more that is known about your building’s general energy consumption, the easier it is to find and address and fix problems.

2. Have a system of preventative maintenance in place and acted upon.

Regular HVAC maintenance from a HVAC professional will make your system more efficient and help prevent costly repairs. Clogged filters, dirty ducts and coils, debris and dust laden vents and fatigued parts will make your system work harder and longer to get to set temperatures. If you have a preventative maintenance contract with Alpha Mechanical, our HVAC technicians will thoroughly inspect and clean different parts of your system to ensure peak system efficiency.

3. Make repairs promptly

Ensuring that heating and cooling systems are always operating at peak efficiency helps control energy costs. Thus make repairs promptly. Putting off repairs can lead to an even costlier major breakdowns. Also when you add the constantly growing cost of inefficient HVAC operation to the repair expense it is better to act quickly and will end up less costly in the long run.

4. Use programmable thermostats and smart technology

A variety of major HVAC manufacturers sell HVAC units that may be controlled and monitored by an app on a mobile device. With this technology, a network of sensors and touchscreen wi-fi thermostats can continuously monitor and control the ambient temperature throughout the facility and improve the indoor air quality of the building. All the while allowing data to be collected to facilitate a better program of planned preventative maintenance by Alpha Mechanical, this saves on energy bills, reduces overall costs by not heating or cooling beyond requirements and saves on maintenance and/or expensive repairs.

5. Change your older HVAC system, upgrade or retrofit?

A retrofit can be a stop-gap before you have to replace your system entirely. Retrofits, which can include replacing the system’s compressor, adding condenser fan controls, adding demand-controlled ventilation and adding air side economizers, can boost your comfort and reduce your energy bill. Studies have shown that a retrofit can equate to an energy savings of up to 35 percent. That makes a retrofit an attractive option when you’re thinking about how to save energy in buildings.

While a retrofit might not be a good fit in all instances, a large well–maintained, but energy – guzzling system might be a good candidate for a retrofit.

6. Improve the system's insulation.

This is not just about walls and windows. Adding insulation around pipes, HVAC ducting, and electrical outlets reduces the amount of air conditioning and heating that is lost without having any impact on your building’s comfort level. For example, if your duct work has not been cleaned or inspected for a long time, it’s possible that the insulation has been compromised over time. It may have holes and tears that leak cool air from the air conditioner and warm air from the furnace. That air never makes it to the registers and the occupied areas of your building, but instead warms and cools the crawl spaces where the ducts are.

7. Educate tenants or employees

Most people are happy to use energy wisely if they are made aware what the best practices are. Simply explaining to them how a particular action affects energy costs positively or negatively may be all the incentive they need to change their habits. If you want to significantly cut your usage, everybody needs to be on board. Conduct training sessions with employees or building tenants to teach them about energy consumption measures. Let them know that you are monitoring consumption, and even provide incentives for changes

Ten Ways Spiral Ductwork Can Save You Money!

Alpha Mechanical News

Alpha Mechanical Five Guys.jpeg

Spiral ducts are popular in the HVAC industry for their contemporary aesthetic and overall efficiency. For example a round duct is more efficient than a rectangular duct in performing the same task; it is also smaller in cross-sectional area and has less duct wall exposed to moving air.

So what are the differences between round ducts and rectangular ducts and can spiral ductwork save money and increase efficiency?

1. Air leakage at duct joints can lead to energy loss and impaired system efficiency. Quality self-sealing spiral duct systems can guarantee a system that meets or exceeds the highest industry air-leakage standard.

2. When leakage is virtually eliminated, the actual cost of filtering, heating, cooling, and distributing conditioned air is kept to a minimum.

3. The pressure drop of air leaving an air-handler is usually lower in a typical spiral system. The spiral design provides equal pressure internally and allows the air to flow evenly and efficiently, also leading to lower energy use.

4. Air leakage can be detrimental to indoor air quality. Because of concern regarding "sick buildings," there is a demand for more fresh-air intake. With airtight ducts, it is easier and more economical to meet these stricter demands.

5. The problem of noise breakout can be avoided with spiral duct because the reverberation created by the pressure differential existing in rectangular duct does not occur with spiral duct.

6. The inherent design of rectangular duct involves air moving around sharp edges, dampers, and turning vanes. Obstruction to airflow can contribute to noisy turbulence. With spiral duct, less sharp edges equal less noise.

7. Many facilities now require regular inspection and internal cleaning of ductwork. The approved cleaning methods for spiral duct are readily available, economical, and effective.

8. With rectangular duct, extra space - up to 3 inches extra - must be factored in for the connections and reinforcements needed at each joint. This is not a consideration when installing spiral ductwork.

9. Air-flow measurement, a periodic responsibility of a mechanical engineer, can be simplified. Many accurate and inexpensive flow-measurement devices specifically designed for spiral duct enable regular check-ups or continuous monitoring.

10. The installed cost of spiral duct - which includes product, parts, labor, warehousing, transportation, packaging, and waste disposal - can be considerably less than rectangular duct (in some cases, up to 50-percent less).

How Alpha Mechanical Ltd use Smart Commercial HVAC technology.

Alpha Mechanical News

At Alpha Mechanical Mechanical we are using the latest commercial HVAC technology can allow us to determine HVAC issues as and also before they arise and allow building operators to significantly reduce costs.

With smart wifi connected HVAC integrated systems, a major advantage of using these types of technologies is that they we can remotely troubleshoot the heating or cooling system before calling it escalates into a serious issue. On many units, this can be accomplished on both the control panel for the unit and remotely via the mobile app. These devices can monitor the operation of such components as blowers, condensers, compressors, and fans, alerting you to issues before they become hazardous.

  • Smart HVAC systems allow demand control, by improving the response of systems to the heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

  • Smart systems can also embed, in addition to sensors, learning algorithms in order to better fit with users behaviour or building's use.

  • Another strength of smart systems is their ability to communicate information about their operation, energy consumption, energy efficiency and potential problems.

Intelligent HVAC Systems

We are moving towards an age where technological advances have altered every facet of our lives. The HVAC industry has become one of the fastest technologically evolving industries. Manufacturers have become more innovative in designing heating, cooling, and ventilation products. Commercial HVAC systems and controls are getting smarter and more efficient.

Commercial building operators are busy and managing a number of competing priorities. Wi-Fi thermostat for commercial buildings. An example here shows a touch-screen thermostat allows for control of a building’s heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system from anywhere in the world - from within their facility, or via smartphone, tablet or computer.

Integrated HVAC systems

There is a growing trend for HVAC systems that are integrated into the design and construction of a building. This means that HVAC systems are now required to be integrated in a meaningful way with the mechanical systems of a building and consequently into the building management system that controls lighting, water or security. These mechanical systems can be integrated into one point of control and be managed on one panel making it easy and convenient for building owners to monitor energy use.

As the industry embraces smart solutions, systems not only allow users to control their air conditioning units remotely on the smart devices but also help create a program for preventative maintenance.

The goal of smart HVAC is to have a system that compiles and utilises all of the data from what’s going on in a building, that keeps everything properly cooled/heated, saves money, and mitigates any issues associated with usage.

At Alpha Mechanical we are leading the way in using the very latest technology to achieve these goals and reduce costs to you and significantly increase your HVAC performance.
